You know what’s a great breakfast combination? Waffles and shaved ice. Now, if a bowl of Frosted Flakes is your breakfast standard, then this may sound a bit unconventional. However, if you’re keen to discovering simple and even unique experiences for your taste buds, then this is for you.
Yellow House Café in Koreatown is a fun place to go when you don’t know exactly what you want, but you’re open to a variety of options. The café is an Asian fusion restaurant with a menu that focuses on Asian inspired meals with a few American dishes to please both brave and timid tastes. Glancing at the menu, you can see plates that include sushi rolls, dukboki, BBQ beef quesadillas, seafood linguini, fried rice, ramen, dumplings, and so much more. What caught my tongue eye was the waffles and shaved ice. I know what you’re thinking: “With so much available, why would you choose those two?” It’s simple: I followed my gut. At the time, all I wanted was something that was sweet and packed with calories, but also full of fruit so I wouldn’t feel so bad about it all. That was this meal!
I ordered the plain waffles and added fresh fruit, chocolate syrup, and powdered sugar ($7.90). It was exactly how breakfast should be: filling, fresh, and satisfying to your current hungry mood. What stole the show—and made it difficult to finish the waffles—was the shaved ice. Although I read the menu description, I got much more than I expected. I ordered a small green tea shaved ice ($6.95) which came with syrup, condensed milk, mochi balls, fresh fruit, fruitty pebbles, and ice cream. This may be the best shaved ice. You can tell just how fresh the fruit was and it paired so well with the ice cream. The condensed milk made it taste so sweet and of course, who doesn’t love mochi balls? If that’s you, then we may have to reconsider this friendship. While I can’t say my combo created a perfectly balanced breakfast, I can admit it tasted pretty damn perfect.
