Wolfgang Puck Bar and Grill in Downtown LA
You know you’re pretty awesome when you’re invited to food events at Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill. I’d love to toot my own horn to that one, but my coworker got the invitation not to me. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve gone to some pretty great restaurants which I adore, but to be invited to the restaurant owned by the celebrity chef is pretty top notch. Honestly, it’s great that she was invited, and it was even greater for me since she let me tag along with her. That meant I didn’t have to hide in her trunk and “accidentally” run into her in front of the restaurant and sneak in ever so close behind her. I would do it if I had to, but I probably would have fallen asleep in the trunk, suffocated, died, and missed out on everything. Thankfully, it didn’t come to that.
Instead, I walked in alongside her like a normal person. I use the word “normal” loosely. The night of our visit happened to be the night of LA Live’s Dark Nights. It’s an evening where art, music, dance, and creative vendors take over LA Live. Add to that, restaurants have specially priced menus and parking is discounted or free if you’re a Downtown Preferred Member (FYI – sign up for it; it’s free and it comes in handy!). Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant was one of the eateries with a menu priced for the event. Since I was in on my coworker’s invite, the food was comped. However, I was surprised that everything offered, both food and beer, was only $5!
Once we sat down we checked out what would be served. Truffled Potato Chips and Prime Beef Sliders ($5 each) as well as the Margherita Pizza and Vegetarian Pizza (not on menu). Truffle potatoes. Do I have to sit at the unpopular table if I say out loud that I don’t like truffle anything? When it comes to truffle fries, truffle burger, truffle oxygen, I’ll pass. When these chips came out I wasn’t sure how I would like them considering I’m already biased against them. Then they had bleu cheese to top them off which is the equivalent to old mayonnaise to me; this wasn’t going to end well. Thankfully, the chips weren’t doused in truffle so they were eatable and the bleu cheese wasn’t as bitter as I’m used to. I didn’t dive further into the plate past a chip or two, but that’s actually a big step for me.
The sliders came next! They came on a tray of three and although they were small in size, they were big in taste. The tiny burgers had Vermont white cheddar, house made pickles, and an onion marmalade. The beef was rich and the marmalade gave the slider a sweet taste. Although I was able to eat a single one in two bites, the other two sliders made it feel more filling. Like whole burger–well, maybe like half of a whole burger.
The last dishes we ate were the pizzas. First was the margherita followed by the vegetarian. If you know me, then you know that I’m a big carnivore. However, I have my moments when I can eat a meatless dish. That rare moment happened today. The margherita pizza had fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and the greenest basil leaves. It was a light and thin pizza that wasn’t overpowered with tomato sauce. I had low expectations for the vegetarian pizza because, well, it had only veggies on it. Surprisingly, the pizza wasn’t too shabby. It was refreshing thanks to all the colorful veggetables of yellow peppers, lettuce, and few other great ingredients. Would I order it over a sausage or pepperoni pizza? Please. But did I have more than one slice? Of course.
This was my first time at Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill and I really enjoyed it. I was shocked at how much food they offered for only $5 and would definitely return for more and maybe to try out the full menu. I’ll skip the veggie dishes on that visit.
