What to Order On Your Next Visit to The Henry in West Hollywood
The music was loud and that’s what I wanted. The lights turned dim as the sun began to set and that’s exactly what I needed. I had a long day at work and although it was good and a drive home would be ideal, I decided to end it at The Henry in West Hollywood. My optimism for delicious plates along with the anticipation of great company was more than enough to make me change my routine and do something different after leaving work.
Lucky for me it would end better than expected.
Long before my fork made way to the final bite, my friend Tona and I were seated table side near the kitchen. The vibe and the appeal of the restaurant from the entry to the bar to the dining room was engaging and exciting without being overwhelming. That made it the perfect place to be at the end of the day or the start of it – depending on how you spend your twenty-four hours.
In the minutes we started to play catch up, we broke the conversation to order. In the moments where we picked back up and talked about the events of the week – both good and annoying—our food arrived. Any discussion about who we were currently or no longer dating came to a complete halt once the Strawberry and Grapefruit Spritz ($13 each) glistened before us. Lucky for the both of us, we ordered the right one to match our preferences. Pairing with it perfectly was the Lebanese Hummus ($15) and the Warm Soft Pretzel with Black Truffle Fondue ($14). I am not ashamed to admit that I had no intention of ordering a pretzel as it as always been the most simplistic and bland item a person could order – especially outside of a local fair. However, Tona’s insistence on getting it would quickly prove me wrong as it was absolutely incredible. If you have the chance to get the pretzel at The Henry, get the pretzel!
Appetizers aside the restaurant created absolutely delicious main dishes with sides to match.
The Rotisserie Prime Rib Dip ($21) was ordered with a side of truffle fries and it was possibly one of the best prime ribs I’ve had in a while. Made with horseradish, charred onions, and served with au jus taking a bite into it was like biting the prime rib other prime rib’s wish they could be. Maybe that was a bit of a stretch, but it’s how it tasted. Adding a side of Summer Corn with Mascarpone and Parmesan ($7) took away any attention that was given to the prime rib. It was delicately sweet, it was exciting in its flavor, and it was gone in a matter of moments.
At the same time, Tona and I had the Korean Prime Skirt Steak ($32). A complete contrast to the sandwich, the steak sat over a double egg fried rice, bok choy, snap peas, mint, cilantro, and ginger. It was full of flavor and you could almost taste each specific ingredient. It was delightful from the start and carried that way to the very end. Another side to it all, we had the Cheddar and Chive Smashed Potatoes ($7). Unfortunately, in comparison to all the items that have graced the table this was the least interesting. Tona and I were hoping they would instill some sort of remarkable flavor to the potatoes, but they didn’t. They were good, there’s no question about that, but that was all. Sitting next to such strong plates, the potatoes weren’t as captivating. My suggestion, skip them and order a second helping of the corn.
Ending the night we split dessert. A Peanut Butter Moelleux ($10) took a dark chocolate cake and sprinkled it with salted peanuts, drizzled it with caramel, and sat it next to a peanut butter ice cream. This is the dish if you love all things peanut butter and you don’t have a sugar allergy. It’s a lot of everything you would want in a dessert and can be the best way to end a dinner.
Drinks, dinner, and dessert at The Henry was a great change to the routine of my day. Enjoying all of the food and cocktails over hours of conversation with Tona only made it better.
