Once in a while, I struggle to find something for lunch. There may be five to ten restaurants around, but my gut might be so indecisive that I can’t pick a place (or even a cuisine) to eat. This happened yesterday before lunch. Although I work just outside of Downtown LA and have plenty of eateries close by, my silly self couldn’t pick a spot. Bronzed Aussie in Santee Alley? No. How about Home in Los Feliz? Nah. Maybe Berlin Currywurst in Grand Central Market? Nope. I had no clue what was making me this way, but the minute I thought of Trencher in Echo Park, my problem was solved.
I quickly clocked out, hopped in the car, and drove seven minutes to the corner restaurant. Yeah, I timed it. Once I got there, I was lucky to steal the last open space of the street parking in the area. There isn’t a lot, but you just might get a spot if you parking stalk for a bit. When I got inside, the vibe of the space seemed nice and hipster-ish. It’s Echo Park so “hipster” is kind of expected. They played 90s alternative music, had a wall lined up with books, and plenty of seating. It’s was pretty chill.
After I looked over the menu, out of nowhere, I knew exactly what to get. I ordered the Angus Burger with avocado ($9, served with house chips; $2 for avocado), French Fries ($4), and a Lemonade ($3). It wasn’t long before the waitress brought my lunch to me. The lemonade was refreshing, super sweet, and tart. I thought it was going to be rather small, but it came in a nice size jar.
The fries weren’t crispy like I prefer; instead they were on the soft side. Still really good. When I saw the helping of house chips, I questioned why I got fries in the first place. It was unnecessary to have ordered both, but I think I was overestimating my hunger when drooling over the menu. Keep that in mind when ordering, you get house chips with your sandwich/burger so if you’re not a hungry, hungry hippo you may not need a side.
I enjoyed the burger. The grass fed beef patty was topped with thinly sliced red onions, butter lettuce, tomatoes, American cheese, and my added avocado. When I sliced the burger in half, I could see just how thick the patty was. Even better. When I grabbed it to pick it up, it oozed with juice! The first chomp in was great. It was packed with flavor that made me more than satisfied!
All in all, Trencher was (and is) a great spot to eat. The food tasted like it was made with quality ingredients and the atmosphere was relaxed and easy going. I like it and will definitely return for either brunch or just another lunch. What made me really happy was the quick service. I was able to order, eat, and take pictures without losing a ton of time. Even better, I was able to clock in from lunch with time to spare! Aww, yeah!
