There’s a beautiful happiness that you get when you find something better than what you had before.
Maybe that something is big, small, or even a pleasant combination of the two. It can be finding love, landing a career, or if you’re like me it’s those things and discovering a new restaurant. Regardless of what it is, the fact that you find it is exciting. It can bring a smile to your face as it takes you from one position (for example a crummy job) and propels you to something better (your dream career). That’s where I was earlier this month when I read the news about Starbucks discouraging their staff from wearing apparel promoting racial equalitiy at work. It was disappointing to read the many articles as I’ve been a loyal customer since 2012. From carrying the physical gold card to having a specific drink – I was committed to the company. When the news broke about their stance, I ended my relationship with the global franchise.
Only problem, I still wanted my latte fix.

I set out to find a new shop that supported racial equality, had friendly staff, and made delicious drinks. Thanks to the many
Instagram posts highlighting black coffee shops in Los Angeles, I stumbled upon Little Amsterdam Coffee. I quickly found that the shop exceeded my criteria. It’s a black owned business that empowers black individuals. The owner, Josh Mock, has a team of amicable baristas from TJ and Blue who greet you and put a smile on your face when you walk in. Scanning over the menu it’s easy to pick a favorite from their teas, LAmondae, and lattes. I highly suggest an iced New Amsterdam Latte ($4.50) with your choice of milk (go with oat milk!).
The icing to the cake that I didn’t know I wanted, is they’re less than a mile away from my job. All of those components combined as given me a new destination to grab a latte. What makes me happiest, is I love Little Amsterdam Coffee so much that I don’t even miss Starbucks.
Often times we may not realize it, but certain departures and introductions can be incredible. Walking into Little Amsterdam Coffee is a perfect example. It may not be easy to recognize it at first, but in some instances we’re lucky to discover something new. That pivot from the things we’ve known for so long to things that are better can be exactly what we need even if we don’t know it yet.
