The Raymond in Pasadena
A lot of people have a bucket list. It’s full of places to explore, celebrities to meet, or adventures to have. For myself, I have a restaurant bucket list. It’s made up of places I want to try because they make appetizing food or are highly recommended; all narrated (in my head) by Morgan Freeman or Tina Fey. For the last few months, The Raymond has been on my list. I see it every day on my drive home from work and I promise myself that I will go on the coming weekend. Only problem, I never have. Until last weekend! I was so eager to cross it off my list that I kidnapped, uh…invited, my friend Ajay to join me.
Nestled on a corner of South Fair Oaks Avenue is the restaurant and bar that I would finally get to experience. After we sat down in the main outdoor area, I explored the location. It has an indoor eating area, three outdoor spaces, a full bar, a grandiose fireplace, and art throughout the interior. As I oogled and eyed the trees and greenery within the patio sections, I met the executive chef, Tim. He told me all about their food, the different personalities of the menus, and let me tour the kitchen! This was fun because I saw the cooks working passionately to get their best creations out to customers. They were fast, precise, and they cracked jokes about one another. It looked like fun, hot and busy, but still fun. Once i got back to my seat, it was clear to see that the entire location balances a casual-upscale energy, which means it caters to those who want to feel relaxed in jeans and flip flops or those who prefer business attire. It’s really a nice fit for everyone.

Now was the time to order. Our waiter, Clint, was ready to help us figure out what we’d love most from the menu, starting with drinks. Ever since I cut back on soda, lemonade is always my choice. Clint made the suggestion that I get the Sparkling Lemonade ($5). Normally, my lemonade doesn’t sparkle so I was intrigued by this version. When he brought it over, it exceeded my standard for lemonade. Sweet, lively, and refreshing! Thanks to Clint, any lemonade I get will have to sparkle.
To start our brunch, we ordered the Blueberry Muffin and Cinnamon Roll ($6 each) from the Beginnings section on the menu. Although it’s a simple muffin, I loved the taste, smell, and the decoration of the pastry from this restaurant. The cinnamon roll was my favorite of the two. It’s made with a cream cheese frosting, sweet cinnamon, raisins and walnuts. It was delicious and so warm that when I cut it in half, steam rose from the center! It was great!
Then came the brunch of all brunches. Ajay ordered the Eggs Benedict ($14) and I ordered the Pineapple French Toast ($14). When the plates were placed in front of us, it was clear that this was no simple dish. Instead, it was the type of brunch that great brunch hopes to be. No exaggeration, it was gorgeous. Ajay’s eggs Benedict were served with large helpings of avocado, crisp bacon, and topped with a spicy chipotle hollandaise. When he cut down the center, the yolk flowed like a river in the amazon. Such a stunning sight that it felt like time slowed just so we could enjoy the moment. I caught myself grabbing my fork to dive in when I remembered, “Let him take the first bite.” When it was finally my turn it was incredible! There were so many flavors surrounding the egg, mixed in with the spicy hollandaise, and covering the English muffin that it could be considered exotic.
Next was my dish. My simple white plate was decorated with large slices of vanilla brioche, covered in pineapples dripping with caramel sauce, and topped with honey butter that cascaded from the top brioche and trickled down the plate. I was nervous just looking at it and felt a little shy at how I would approach it. It was the kind of feeling that you had when you were about to ask your hot classmate out on a date. You were shy because you were the dork with braces, glasses, and a strange obsession with striped t-shirts. Oh, that was only me? Ok whatever. Disregard the feeling and lets skip to me eating it. Cutting into the French toast was like running a bow across a violin and hearing a beautiful song. It was soft and delicate. The taste was sweet and delightful. The pineapple alongside the caramel covered in butter made the toast completely flavorful and exhilarating to taste. I absolutely adored it.
After the entire meal I couldn’t help but fall in love with The Raymond. It has an atmosphere that is both inviting and relaxing, a staff that can steer you in the best food direction, and a menu that can satisfy your taste buds better than you could imagine. I would highly recommend you go to this restaurant for a holiday, birthday, or any day in the week ending in “Y”. You will enjoy the experience as much as I did, and if you don’t it’s probably because you went with a lame friend. Next time invite me, my mom says I’m loads of fun.
