I didn’t take Tacos Tu Madre for granted, but I wish I would have sat in the moment of being there more than I did. The Mexican restaurant in West Hollywood was the last place I dined before the stay at home order by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti went into effect. Of all the places to have a “last supper” (or brunch in this case), it was perfect.
I was in good company with my food blogger friend, Johnny. We both came to the restaurant to try out their brunch menu and it would ultimately be where we spent a few hours. As the last Sunday before everything changed for the city, we didn’t realize that three hours in the space would soon lend to memories we would yearn to relive. But that wouldn’t matter until it would matter. Instead, we ate and talked about anything and everything. It was easy to do over the drinks and dishes from the Tacos Tu Madre menu.
The restaurant is a place you want to be. It’s the type of space that makes you feel like you’re at home even if you’re nowhere near it. The décor is vibrant, the patio is relaxing, and the menu is full of more choices then you can commit to in a single visit. Johnny and I tried our best and gave it an honest effort, but failed miserably. Hopefully a return visit post-COVID-19 will give us that opportunity. If not, then at least we’ll have nostalgia.
Recalling that day I was elated with the food we ordered. A variety of aromatic items slide underneath our noses on the sprightliest of plates. After taking more photos than we know what to do with, we let our eyes and our fingertips dart back and forth between the dishes at hand. It was easy to discover what piqued our taste as they were each delicious. I found myself eating one plate and yearning for the one prior to it only to repeat that motion continuously. The Pancakes Tu Madre ($14) that took a simple fluffy waffle and submerged it underneath citrus macerated berries, fresh mint, and a strawberry Quik whipped cream was hard to walk away from. Not to mention, Carnitas Breakfast Tacos ($10) with braised pork, pickled watermelon, Thai basil furikake, and an egg that shines like the sun was something I was beyond pleased to devour.
Plate after plate, from one side of the table to the next it was a brunch worth experiencing. Whether we let our eyes widen over the Beunos Dias Burger ($15), Breakfast Burrito ($10), or gently inched into the Chef Oliver’s Breakfast Tacos ($10) following it with sips from our refreshing Mango Lime Slush ($6) and Bardonna Cold Brew ($4) it was such a lovely brunch in a beautiful space.
Looking back on the hours we had at Tacos Tu Madre prior to the start of the COVID-19 stay at home order, I can truly say that I am lucky and blessed to have had them as my last dine in restaurant. It felt good to be there, it was delicious eating there, and the minute I can do it again I will. In the meantime, if you’re looking for a place where you can pick up delicious Mexican food in Los Angeles, let it be from Tacos Tu Madre. Every dollar and every bit of support goes a long way and won’t go unnoticied.
