Mornings are becoming a bit more routine during COVID-19.
You may read that a couple of times and question if I’m leaning further into my own delusions, but I assure you I am not. I may feel as if I’m on a rollercoaster of emotions with this pandemic, but one thing is for sure the my mornings are becoming more routine. It may be surprising, but I’m actually starting to like it. My alarm goes off, I pretend I don’t hear it, I roll out of bed and into a workout practice, and after getting dressed I find excitement in the food that I’m about to eat.
It’s a familiar routine.

What has recently made me eager to get up before my alarm was visiting Haute Mess in Los Angeles. The Beverly Blvd café and market with European inspiration, propelled me into my day sooner than I expected at the mere thought of crossing its doors. Seeing the menu online and scrolling through their images on their social media pages was enough to get me going as the sun broke the day.
Being inside the space felt nice. Darting my eyes between their dessert case, coffee bar, and the items covering the shelves I could see myself losing the hours of the day in Haute Mess. Instead of doing that, I ordered and photographed my food. Seeing the two plates in front of me it was easy to let out a gentle whisper of “wow” at the sight of them. There was the Prosciutto Di Parma ($12) with smeared fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, arugula and a pesto vinaigrette. It was the perfect sandwich to squeeze between my hands and the simplest yet flavorful sandwich to dive into.
Just as lovely as the sandwich was the Tri-Color Salad ($15). The plate before me was covered between a welcome amount of baby wild arugula, Belgian endives, radicchio with long Parmesan shavings and a drizzle of balsamic vinaigrette. Seeing the colors bounce across the white plate and tasting the powerful ingredients made me regret that days that I talked poorly on salads in the past. At Haute Mess, it was delicious.
COVID-19 may be forcing us all to pivot during these times, but I’m finding joy in the routine of some of these days. Looking forward to times filled with restaurants like Haute Mess may seem foolish, but only to those who haven’t been. Visit the restaurant for yourself and I hope the thought of them gets you up before your alarm clock.
