I don’t know if Matthew knows how great he is at his job, but he is pretty great.
Chances are you’re confused at whom Matthew is and that’s fine, for now. The hope is that by the time you reach the last sentence on this page that you’ll know why he’s the best at his job: Spirit Cruises Norfolk. This isn’t a glowing recommendation for him that would be better fit on LinkedIn, but just a recant of an exciting moment on the water with a person who knew how to design the time with such effortless delight.
I was on board the Spirit Cruise on their Virginia Elite private yacht side-by-side a handful of writers. With the crew on deck, Matthew was the director leading us through the experience. Before being seated he introduced us to the yacht and all it entailed. In 2016, the Virginia Elite underwent a $1.6 million renovation to make the vessel even more customizable for its guests. With two decks – Elizabeth River (First Deck) and James River (Second Deck) – the yacht has enough dining and lounge areas to comfortably fit everyone you know. That is, unless you’re extremely popular. For everyone else, the yacht can easily fit 66 people while seated and 80 cocktail style. On both fully enclosed and climate controlled decks, guests can take in the views of Norfolk along the waterfront while playing games. However, if you’re looking to get to the best part of the yacht (aside from the view) it would be the food.
This is where Matthew let his skills take over.
On the lower deck was long table decorated by Matthew with items that represented Norfolk. Along the table were a local oyster shell with our name, peanuts, cotton, and a printed drawing featuring the yacht while docked. Matthew made our brunch feel comfortable; it all looked beautiful and I didn’t want to leave. That’s when it was time to eat.
With the option to have the yacht’s menu buffet style, Captain’s choice, or to order off of a curated menu, we had a brunch prepared by Chef Rebecca Rose. Focusing on local cuisine, we were presented with a buffet with light vegetarian items and an emphasis of meat. Fruit, eggs benedict (with or without lobster), quiche, bacon, sausage, and slices of ham filled each plate. Not far away were glasses of mimosas that never fell empty. It was delicious and communal and being on the yacht with such beautiful views was the best two hours the day could have witnessed.
Spending the morning on the Virginia Elite private yacht was a beautiful way to see another side of Norfolk. Thanks to Matthew and his great ability to create a beautiful experience while telling a captivating history of the city, everyone on deck was able to see Norfolk in a new way.
