Slapfish in Brea

When it comes to this food blogger life, my greatest problem isn’t what to order but trying not to order everything. That was the case yesterday as I stared at the menu of Slapfish. The popular seafood restaurant opened a new location in Brea, and I was previewing their menu with a handful of foodies prior to the grand opening. As I stared at the menu with TJ, the girl at the register smiled and said, “You can order anything.” I winced and she repeated herself, but this time I heard her in slow-mo: “Aaaannnyyyttthiiinnggg.” My waistband begged me not to order the entire menu, while the fat girl in me started to breathe heavily with excitement. Somehow, I found a compromise between the two. The fact that foodie friends like friends like GrubFiend, The Episodic Eater, Tanaya’s Table, and Miss Foodie Problems, already ordered helped me chose modestly from the available options.
To start I ordered a Lobster Roll ($18.5), obviously. It was a 100% real lobster on a lightly buttered roll with a shower of lemon mayo and warm butter. It was such a soft roll and Chef Andrew Gruel didn’t skimp on the helpings of lobster. With each bite, lobster either fell into my mouth or out of the bun. For the record, I considered the latter to be exercise.
The next dish to arrive to our table was the Surf and Turf Lobster Burger ($15). I underestimated the girth of this burger because when the waitress brought it out, my mouth dropped. The burger took a grilled beef patty on two buns and packed it with lobster and caramelized onions and served it with hand-cut fries. Biting into the burger was like a collision of flavors! The beef, lobster, and onions, all carried such varying tastes that easily complimented each other effortlessly. But if I had to choose, it was the buttery taste and the smooth texture of the lobster in the burger that made my eyes roll in elation.
At this point TJ’s Clobster Grilled Cheese ($15) arrived and I realized how tight my pants were getting. I’m not pregnant, but in that moment wearing maternity pants sounded so good. Since it was his dish, I was happy that I didn’t have to finish it. The description of the grilled cheese on the menu was brief: half crab, half lobster, awesome sauce. Those six words strung together won TJ over, and seeing it in front of me I can see why. The sandwich was stacked, ooey, and gooey. It’s not for the weak. The crispy slices of toast with crab and lobster with a spread of cheese melted in my hand and my mouth. After a few chews, I had no idea whether a particular bite was crab or lobster but I honestly didn’t care, it was delicious!
I really enjoyed previewing the Slapfish menu. The restaurant knows how to take seemingly simple ingredients and turn them into great dishes that can fill you up. While the price point for lobster is rarely cheap, the taste will help to ease the pain of the sting to your wallet.
