Market Milkshake Mondays at Plan Check in Downtown LA
Science has made extreme advances in developing cures. Think about it, we have a cure for tetanus. We have a cure for rabies. We have a cure for polio. And hopefully, in a matter of years, we’ll have a cure for douchebaggery. Take a step out of the medical field and into the restaurant industry and you’ll see there’s a remedy for an issue you may not have known existed even though 1 out 1 people have suffered from it. I am pleased to announce that we have finally have a cure when you come down with a case of the Mondays. You come down with this disorder if you’ve ever posted a meme about hating Monday, crossed all the Mondays off your calendar, and/or you only refer to the day as the ‘M-word’. For the 100% of you who have hated Monday, there’s a cure for you. What is it? It’s Market Milkshake Monday at Plan Check.
I was lucky to be invited to a tasting of the new milkshakes at the Downtown LA location. The restaurant is modern, airy, and full of individuality. From the menus displayed on the walls to street signs directing customers to the restroom, Plan Check instills their personality throughout their space.
Executive Chef Ernesto Uchimura, wanted to give his customers a dessert that combined inspiration and freshness. To do so, he created Market Milkshake Monday that would take place at all of the restaurants. The milkshakes would take produce from local farmers’ markets and turn them into shakes. The drinks aren’t preplanned and they change weekly. Every Monday morning, Chef Uchimura takes a trip to a local farmers market and picks ingredients to make a milkshake for that day. They’re picked randomly, but creatively with his guest’s taste buds in mind. For my visit, a group of bloggers like Jay, Kristie, Chrystal, and myself got to sample the Vanilla Bean, Chocolate, and Strawberry Rose Milkshakes ($8 each). Keep in mind, we sampled small versions of the drink. What you’ll get when you go is the classic size below.
The first shake I tried was the Chocolate. It’s an original so it should be pretty standard. The version made at Plan Check was thick, rich, and full of intense cocoa and ice cream. Funny thing, because chocolate is such a common milkshake, I thought I would easily look past it. I’m glad I didn’t because I really enjoyed the richness of this shake.
I quickly found that the Vanilla Bean shake would be my favorite. In spite of being an easy flavor and a classic, it was a lead contender. It was very sweet (as it should be), soft, and when it began to melt, it combined with the whip cream like they were made for one another. So simple, but exactly what I liked!
The final of the three drinks was the Strawberry Rose. I saved this one for last because it was so pretty. This milkshake combined the chef’s pick of fresh strawberries alongside cream, milk, and a few other standard ingredients. What made it stand out was the rose flavor sugar crystals sprinkled on top of whip cream and the edible rose petal. This shake was tart, smooth, and fruity. You can definitely taste the freshness of the fruit in the drink. I almost thought I could taste the exact location of the market. Did you get these from The Grove? Kidding, unless I’m right.
There you have it, the most delicious cure you could ever have for the horrid case of the Mondays. It runs until August 2015, so you can enjoy the day for a few more months. After that, I’ll understand if you go back to referring to it as the M-word.
