This past weekend I was in San Diego with my friend Lauren. Sure, I could have been doing cheesy Valentine’s Day festivities with my boyfriend, but he went out of town to be with family. With an empty weekend on my calendar, I took an impromptu trip to what Ron Burgundy coined, the Whale’s Vagina. While running around the giant whale, my friend Lauren and I went to the farmers market in Little Italy. Walking amongst the variety of booths, we ended up buying hummus from Baba Foods and I scored a purse from Verde. What made the chunky monkey inside of me ecstatic was stumbling upon Macaronage.
Macaronage sells macarons; kind of obvious by the name, right? But they’re not exactly like those you’ve had before. Instead, they’re oversized macarons that come in creative flavors and shell colors. You can have them premade or you can customize them to your liking. Flavors include birthday cake, cookies and cream, maple, strawberry cheesecake, and more. Shells can be bright white, teal, red slipper, peach fuzz, and (you guessed it) more. What I like about this business isn’t only the giant confection that I can scoff down like Pooh with a jar of honey, it’s the owners. Macaronage is run by two young women: Teanna Timmons and Jen Stewart. At the booth during my visit was Jen and her fiancé, Adam. She did a great job telling the unique attributes of the macarons from the way they’re made, where we can buy them, and the popularity of the dessert at events and weddings. After all of that, I thought that I could simply buy a single macaron ($2). It wasn’t until the first bite of the cinnamon roll macaron, that I realized I needed another. Lauren and I ended up buying not one, not two, and not three macarons; no dear, we bought an assorted box of 10 ($17). Great job, Jen.
The macarons are delectable and beautiful! The shells are slightly crunchy, the filling is sweet and gooey, and the designs are creative! I thought the flavor I would love most would be caramel, but I was extremely surprised to find Raspberry Almond was my favorite. Don’t get me wrong, I devoured the entire box with complete satisfaction, but once I started off with Raspberry Almond the others couldn’t surpass the luxury of the rose colored macaron. To be honest, I didn’t mind one bit.
