Gelateria Uli in Downtown LA

It’s June in LA and that means the temperature is rising quickly. It’s not end of July hot, but it’s definitely not middle of March cool. That means if you’re going somewhere that requires being outdoors for extended periods of time, it better be worth it. My coworker and I underestimated to power of June heat as we left the office to go Gelateria Uli in Downtown LA. The minute we started walking from 7th Street to Spring Street I began to question the trip. It was hot, the streets were overcrowded, I was getting sweaty, and a creeper standing next to me at the crosswalk thought I looked like his next girlfriend. “No, just no.”
Once I ditched the creep, we made our way inside Gelateria Uli—and they had air conditioning! As the automated air cooled me down, I began to look over the restaurant, pastries on display, and gelato pints in the mini fridge.
We then took a look over all of the different gelato flavors in the case. Looking soon turned into sampling as we were told we could try as many flavors we liked. My coworker and I tried out all of them—almost twice. Out of the creative and traditional flavors like Basil, Bee Pollen, Chocolate, Sea Salt Carmel, and a few others, I settled on Amaretto and Speculoos Cookies. To make it perfect for the hot day, I got a Medium (three scoops for $6.25) in a waffle bowl ($1). I went with one scoop of the Amaretto and two scoops of Speculoos Cookies.
Both scoops of gelato were incredibly smooth, creamy, and light. The scoops aren’t huge, but they are a good size. It’s great because it doesn’t feel like it’s too much to eat nor does it feel like its full of ingredients that will weigh you down. That being said, I don’t feel bad about getting three scoops! The Amaretto flavor had an easy sweetness with a light tart aftertaste. The Speculoos on the other hand was full of crunchy Speculoos cookie pieces. Having small bits of the spiced biscuit type cookie made it the best decision I made all day. I’m the type of person who loves gelato and ice cream when it melts, so once the amaretto and the speculoos flavors began to liquefy it turned into an even tastier cup of gelato. And let’s not forget the waffle bowl—crunchy and freshly made!
Going to Gelateria Uli was the best decision I made that day and it was also the most delicious one. It may have felt like triple degree weather outside and I almost ended up in an unwanted relationship with a creepy stranger, but for amaretto and speculoos gelato, it was all worth it!

OMG – this looks so good! Speculoos is LIFE!
Speculoos is next level happiness, Kimmy!
I fell in love with gelato in Italy but find it so difficult to get authentic gelato in the States, so much of it tastes like an ice cream hybrid. Those flavors sound amazing!
The flavors are indeed amazing, but I honestly think nothing would be comparable to gelato in Italy. You’re so lucky that you got to have it out there!
