I miss pasta.
I don’t mean the kind that I pull out the cupboard, question the expiration date, and then boil in water and hope for the best. I miss the kind of pasta that gets made in a kitchen, plated, and brought before me at a table. If you can gather, I miss pasta minus the cooking effort on my part. Sure, I cook, but everyone else is so much better at it than I am and I’ve accepted that. Still, I miss pasta. I yearn for pasta in restaurants, accompanied by glasses of wine, with friends sitting on the opposite side of the table, and the energy from conversations from strangers ricocheting throughout the room. Most of all, I miss it at Pasta Sisters.
Before coronavirus started to change the way we do everything, I was sitting in Pasta Sisters in Culver City with my friend Christina of We Like LA. Dining in the restaurant before, I wanted nothing more than to return. That chance came as the afternoon changed to evening and we both left work. Landing at the restaurant, it didn’t take long for us to be seated in the patio area as the plates of pasta came out. What was placed in front of us on this night and those before were undoubtedly better than anything I could have made in my house.
But we all knew that.
Over the plates, Christina and I played catch up. Something I’m looking forward to doing when the stay at home order is lifted. Again, you probably already know that. But the evening in Pasta Sisters felt good over Gnnochi, Tagliatelle Bolognese ($12.50), and Bresaola Carpaccio ($13.50). As much as I loved the bolognese and its hearty ground beef and the thinly sliced dried capaccio, it was the homemade gnocchi that I couldn’t get enough of. The pillow like dough topped with asparagus was such a silky dish that each taste was one that I had to savor. Did the conversation stop as I enjoyed this plate? No. But did that mean I was listening? Probably not.
Sorry, Christina…
Looking back on the day at Pasta Sisters I wish I could turn back time. I wish I had the chance to go back and sit with a friend I adore, learn more about each other over food that makes our hearts sing, and watch as the sun goes down over the city surrounding us. Sure I miss the pasta, but if I’m being honest, I really miss the restaurant and how it felt to be there. I didn’t take such times for granted, but I wish I reveled in it more than I did. When this world returns to whatever form of normal it can reside in, I hope to return to Pasta Sisters for moments to enjoy — and for the pasta, but you already knew that.
