When it comes to holidays, everyone has a favorite. Some people love Valentine’s Day while others love Christmas. Me, on the other hand, I enjoy celebrating Pasadena Cheeseburger Week (January 11 to January 17) like it’s a national holiday. As a local to the city, Pasadena Cheeseburger Week consists of the seven days when we give thanks to Lionel Sternberger for being the first to drop cheese on a beef patty in Pasadena in 1926. To celebrate the week, you could erect a shrine in his name or you could do what I do and simply eat all the cheeseburgers your gut can take. To kick off Cheeseburger Week, I recommend that you check out Pasadena’s burger joint with an old school feel: Pie ‘n Burger.
Located at the end of South Lake, Pie ‘n Burger is the type of burger joint you go to when you want something simple, inexpensive, and extremely delicious. For this visit, I ordered a classic cheeseburger ($11.45, fries included): a single patty well done, lettuce, tomato, pickles, gobs of special sauce, and of course cheese. It’s an easygoing cheeseburger that maintains the luxury of taste but without the fuss of excess accoutrement. To add to it, I got a lemonade ($2.25) to wash it down and rewarded myself with a smooth Lemon Meringue Pie ($4.85)!
If you’re checking them out anytime this week, Pie ‘N Burger is offering a killer combo: burger, fries, and drink for only $10.95. You save about $3 and you get to reflect on how much you love cheeseburgers while you’re in a restaurant that has kept its originality throughout time. To sit in a burger joint that still has the vibe of the past, but the taste of the present consumer wants is exciting. It’s the best of both worlds with a burger that easily transports you between the two.
