Remember that time you had to go to the DMV? I know, it’s a horrible memory but stay with me.
You pulled into the parking lot and you saw the line wrap around the building, not once but twice. Well, expect that same length of a line minus the horrible customer service at the grand opening of Mr. Holmes Bakehouse in Highland Park. In defense of the hundreds of people who will most likely be salivating while in line, they won’t be waiting to renew their license. Instead they’re waiting to get their mouth around some of the San Francisco shop’s most coveted pastries.
The bakehouse started by owner, Aaron Caddel, has been getting droves of customers in its original San Francisco location. Being received so well, Caddel opened a location in Seoul, and will grace Angelenos with a house this Saturday October 1st. What’s bringing in so many customers who all share photos online so voraciously? Taking a gander over their social media accounts, it could be the way the shop encourages the love of all things bread. What could be considered a perfect carb revival taps into the guts and hearts of those who simply love bread or those who may have been devouring nothing but kale and pressed juices far too long.
Maybe it’s their spot on branding. Making use of (what’s hopefully a trademark peace sign), Mr. Holmes is clear about who they are and their personality. From their color scheme, voice, and even the products they align with, Mr. Holmes seems like the cool neighbor that you’re glad moved into the area. Move over Mr. Rogers.
It could also be as to-the-point as they have delicious pastries. While I wasn’t able to attend their preview night to try their items in advance, a few came to my job and I got my hands on one before my coworkers ruthlessly ate them like savages. I can honestly say their pastries are incredibly soft, sugary, and the perfect pairing to any coffee. Croissants, cruffins, and danishes–need I say more? Yes? Ok they also have donuts, strawberry jalapeno bear claws, espresso, and a neon “I Got Baked in Los Angeles” sign which should be enough to get you into the shop.
Mr Holmes Bakehouse officially opens in Los Angeles tomorrow, Saturday October 1st. I’ll return to the shop later to write another review of their pastries, but if you’re an eager beaver you can pull out the sleeping bag and camp out right now to get your own. I won’t judge you.
That’s a lie, I’ll judge the hell out of you, but do what makes you happy.

LOL. even now, people line up for the sf location to make sure that they get cruffins. i’ve done 2 early mornings and gotten in line at 8am (which means waking up at 7am bc i was an hour drive away), and they’re good, but not quite worth it if you’re not a morning person.
OMG an hour away?!?! Props to you Heather, you are committed! I just got a bunch of their pastries this week (no cruffin — wahhh) so I’ll be posting about those soon =]
