Michelob Ultra Unveils Its Latest Beer and It’s Pretty Close to Perfect
I’m not the biggest fan of beer.
That’s probably not the best introductory sentence on a post about beer, but stay with me, it gets better. I’m not a fan of beer because I’ve found it to be pretty difficult to find a favorite since the only way to do so is through the process of elimination. Regardless of how many college parties I’ve attended or beer flights I’ve sampled, I’m still in a weird gray area where I can tolerate about half a bottle. Unfortunately, half a bottle here and half a bottle there hasn’t led me to find one that I would brag about to a guy on a first date. If I’m being honest, when a guy asks what my favorite beer is, I just agree to like whichever one mentions.
Him: I really love a good (insert beer brand name here).
Me: Me too, we have so much in common! Let’s delete our Tinder accounts and do this consistently.
Let’s be clear, a guy could say he likes unleaded and I would just smile and nod. “Seriously! And I just love how …you know … fragrant it is.” With that in mind, when I read the invitation to try Michelob Ultra’s new beer Pure Gold, in the Hollywood Hills I was a bit conflicted. I don’t really like beer, but I do like the hills of Hollywood. A few minutes of debating and I RSVP’d as attending.
Just as you would imagine, the hills were beautiful. The party took place at the Wattles Mansion and Gardens and the location was a sight to behold even late at night. With the outdoor decorations designed to make the space feel like it was resting on an island, I let the vibes take me away. In between the relaxing atmosphere, I managed to take a few shots of the setup, food, and of course the beer. With a hand-picked catered table by the team at the Los Angeles based restaurant, Sqirl, there was more than enough salad and charcuterie essentials to pick up and enjoy.
The light snacks only made sense of the alignment when taking into perspective the brand and the positioning of Michelob Ultra. In the Anheuser-Busch family of brands, Michelob was developed in 1896 and hit shipments in 1961. With a product line of varying beers including Original Lager, AmberBock, Light, and Honey it wasn’t until 2002 that Michelob extended its line to include Ultra which offered a low carbohydrates and calories beer. At this event I was now holding the beer that hit stands just a week earlier. The Pure Ultra beer is triple filtered, made entirely of organic ingredients and grains, and has no artificial flavors or coloring. To help solidify the beer as a healthier and organic alternative than what’s on aisles today, Pure Ultra comes in at only 2.5 carbohydrates, 85 calories, and 0 grams of fat (per 12 fluid oz).
Apprehensive that the beer would be hoppy, dry, or any negative memory I’ve had of what remained in half full bottles I took to it slowly. But after a few sips I quickly found that it wasn’t similar to those I’ve had. Contrary, this beer was actually good. It was light, refreshing, and felt effortless to drink. So much so that I actually finished the bottle and eagerly let the bartender pour me one in a glass. Then grabbed a third bottle shortly after. What made me excited about asking for another was that I didn’t feel like I was getting drunk and I didn’t catch my gut pressing against the waistline of my pants. Instead it felt good drinking it which made me understand how this beer could be aligned with the healthier lifestyle and sports that its marketing and branding proposes it to be.
As I made my way home from the event I was glad that I attended. Being in the Hollywood Hills made for a good night not just for the perfect city views, but also for the perfect beer I discovered. Now when I’m on a date and a guy asks what beer I like, I have an answer that I’m not making up.
Thanks, Michelob. You’ve given me a beer to enjoy and made me less of a first date liar.
Good going.
