A night out in Hollywood can involve a variety of things, but if great food isn’t part of it then it’s a miss to me. While that’s a personal preference, it’s a pretty strong one. Should your evening take you to Hollywood and you’re looking for a restaurant to satisfy your taste buds, then Magari on Sunset Boulevard is a great choice.
I recently discovered the restaurant after hearing they launched a new pizza menu. They already had a well-concepted menu of Italian dishes with Japanese components which caught my eye, but to see that they incorporated pizza under a similar design made booking a reservation a simple decision.
The restaurant, like many in the area is beautiful.
But it’s the food that really sets them apart. The evening of my visit included entrees and desserts but began with cocktails. The Furor Forte ($18) and Bella Cosi ($16). The former (not pictured) is an old fashioned with olive oil washed whisky with a Mirto Rosso, Sicilian chai and magari bitters. It’s beautiful and the kind of drink that you can casually sip alongside a variety of plates. Second, the Bella Cosi (below) was comprised of Fujimi Japanese vodka, Lo-Fi Gentian, egg white, lemon, Kinome and aromatic bitters. It’s a captivating drink that if not proceeded with caution can be consumed faster than the waitress can bring your appetizer.
It’s delicious, but you’ve been warned.
While the cocktails are a great way to begin the meal, the food is truly the most memorable part. No surprise there, of course.
The Arugula Salad ($14) was a delightful plate with sparks of yuzu, parmigiano and tellicherry pepper. The things that made it seem simplistic were also the very things that made it delicious. Just a delicious was the Heirloom Tomato Salad ($16). Combining Japanese cucumber, corn, smoked tomato vinaigrette and ricotta salata this was a refreshing bowl where the smokiness of the vinaigrette brought in dynamic levels of flavor that were joyfully devoured.
After the salads, the pizzas arrived. The Fungi Pizza ($24) could serve as the vegetarian’s dream. Made of shiitake mushrooms, smoked buffalo mozarrela, confit shallots and preserved lemon the pizza had everything you could want, as long as you don’t want meat. Next was the Prosciutto ($25). Plentiful heaping’s of thinly sliced prosciutto sat on top of fior di latte, marinated tomatoes, arugula and Parmigiana. It was perfection from beginning to end.
To end the night, one should always have dessert.
On this visit the choices were Olive Oil Cake ($12) and a Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta ($10). The olive oil cake took rosemary glazed plums and whipped sour cream and was the lightest and fluffiest cake. Following, the panna cotta was made with white peach compote and toasted coconut chips making it a smooth and creamy desert to bring the night to a close. Both completely different and both perfectly delectable.
If you’re spending an evening in Hollywood whether for a movie or whatever the evening may bring I hope you have the chance to take a moment to stop in Magari for dinner. Their menu expertly makes wonderful combinations that can turn a nice night in the city into a great one.
