L.A. Café in Downtown LA
I love when my friends and I plan things for the weekend. We’ll wake up with the intent to go out and do something more than people watch at a local café shop. We may plan to go to the beach, amusement park, or shopping, Too bad we just get lazy and wind up at a restaurant instead. If we land at a great spot, I’m not too bothered by it. That’s what happened one Saturday with my friend TJ. The goal was to take him shopping so he could find some new clothes, work on his website, and then eat. We only did one of the three things and you already know which one we did: eat.
TJ and I found ourselves at LA Café in Downtown LA. I’ve seen them before but never thought to stop there. The only reason we made it here was because TJ found a picture of their lobster grilled cheese on Instagram. So thankful for Instagram! We were lucky to find metered parking close by—its metered and structure parking only—but once we got out the car we made our way inside. The cool thing about the restaurant is they’re open 24 hours daily. That means you can get all of the great food, desserts, and drink items at any time of the day! Even better, is they’ll deliver, but at a flat rate of $3.25. With all that in mind, we were beyond ready to eat. We had a few options: fresh bakery items like muffins, a few dessert choices of brownies and fruit tarts, or straight up food like breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We went the straight up food route.
TJ got the Lobster Grilled Cheese ($10.99), homemade buzz chips (included), and a Small Caramel Latte ($3.45). I got the Chuck Burger ($8.50) with Avocado ($1), Cheddar ($1), and a pile of seasoned fries (included). I wanted the grilled cheese sandwich, but c’mon, there’s no sense in the both of us ordering the same thing. Plus, TJ is nice enough to share his plate in order to shut me up. He’s a great friend. We sat in the outdoor seating area which had a few tables and chairs; it was a better option as the indoor dining area was limited. Only problem with eating outside is you’re directly on the sidewalk and there are a ton of people asking for money…or your leftovers. I might give them money before I give a piece of my cheeseburger.
Speaking of my cheeseburger, it was great! It was a fresh chuck burger, cheddar cheese, avocado, with tomato, lettuce, dill pickle chips, all on a brioche bun. The meat was thick, extremely juicy, and oozed with taste. I could have done without a bit of the lettuce, but once I yanked some of it out the burger was perfect. Next on the plate were the fries. They are amazing! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside—exactly how I love them. I know there was a good amount of seasoning salt on the fries, but it seemed like there was another secret ingredient that made the fries somewhat sweet. Whatever it was, the fries were extraordinary. They were perfectly balanced and weren’t overly salty. I loved them!
TJ was gracious enough to let me dive into his grilled cheese sandwich. It was two slices of buttered white country bread taking hold of a ton of brie cheese, cheddar cheese, mustard mayo and tarragon, and the best part—lobster! There was so much cheese in it that once it melted, it was the best gooey spread possible. It wasn’t overwhelming in cheese which meant the bits of lobster was prominent. I tried to take another bite, but TJ stopped me. Rightfully so, because I would have devoured it. He did let me take some of his chips as a compromise. Pairing the sandwich with the crispy chips was a good move because it made the whole plate a good meal.
TJ and I may have had a ton of plans set for our day, but I’m kind of glad they all fell through. If not, we probably wouldn’t have made it to L.A. Café. That means we wouldn’t have enjoyed an awesome burger, crispy fries, or a mouthwatering lobster grilled cheese. If I had to think about what’s more important: TJ’s wardrobe or a cheeseburger, I think I would go with the latter every single time. Sorry TJ, but my gut thanks you for your sacrifice!
