Earlier this month Mr. Holmes Bakehouse opened their first location in Los Angeles. The excitement that ensued when people found the brand behind the cruffin would make its way to Los Angeles was loud and clear. Like girls running after a SUV hiding Justin Bieber, you might want to get out the way. In a review about the opening, I got up close with the branding, interior, and merchandise of the San Francisco based store. Although I was unable to try the pastries at the time, I was grateful to get a special delivery of goodies direct from the Mr. Holmes Bakehouse team shortly after.
To say I was excited by all the carbs would be an understatement.
Opening the box felt like I was proposing to myself with pastries instead of a ring. “I do!” I shouted to myself. I wasted little time in devouring the selection pastries (which they cleverly call “edibles”). It was only a matter of time before I found a few favorites within the box.
The first favorite I came across was the Cookie ($3). While you may think it’s just a simply cookie, it’s a bit more than that. They did such a nice job at baking the cookie so that it was soft and chewy, but not to the point that it was too much. The best part of the cookie was the big chocolate chunks scattered throughout. The chocolate wasn’t too sweet or bitter which made it a perfect balance of all the cookie components a girl like me looks to have.
Following the cookies, I really liked Le Donut ($3.50). It was cute with a nice amount of custard topping the donut as if it were a design. I loved biting into the soft donut and then being surprised by smooth the Vanilla or Mexican chocolate custard filling. It was difficult not to have sugar scattered across my face, but thankfully God created napkins and there was plenty in my box.
As a person who loves carbs of any form, to have them in a loaf of bread is probably my favorite. Two variations of Bread Pudding (Sweet and Savory $4.50 each) were in the box. Instead of being a complete glutton I shared the savory with a friend. Hopefully that’ll be good for my karma. As I could see her pummel her face into the bread with pure elation, I hoped to have the same response. Turns out, I did except I was a bit more ladylike–I think. The bread is so soft and sweet and the top has a nice crunch with bits of sugar.
The last pastry that I was so happy to have was the Monkey Bread ($4.50). It was incredibly rich, even for me, so I had it slowly throughout the morning. I loved that it was drenched in caramel, sprinkled with sugar, and topped with pretzels and frosted chex. There was a nice variance of textures from soft to crispy and a multitude of flavors to enjoy. My only regret is I didn’t have this with a latte or tea because it would be a perfect pairing!
Getting to try the delicious pastries from Mr. Holmes Bakehouse was a great way for me to bring the store’s opening full circle. The shop has managed to create items that stand out from the usual pastry store and as a result they will secure a place for themselves here in LA. Since each pastry is rich, sweet, and beautiful in their own way they are definitely worth a try if you’re ever in the area and you don’t mind a line.

i’ve only had their cruffins, donuts and california croissants (which is super interesting; it has smoked salmon and seaweed and pickled ginger), and i can’t even remember if i knew that they had some of these things (but maybe the sf and la menus are different?). i’m just jealous that you didn’t have to get up early and wait!
At first I thought you were gonna stop at cruffins and then the list of things you had kept going lol! You’ve had a good amount of things and they all sound good. But was the CA croissant interesting in a good way or a blaaaaaahhhh way? I think the menus are a tad different. I called the SF one to see if they sold one of the breads and they were like, “What’s that?” and I was like, “That answers that question…”. And yes I was super happy tooo!!!!!
i have a bad habit of wanting to try lots of different things, so that’s how i ended up trying more than just cruffins (; it was interesting in a good way! a little salty, but still good. in other savory croissant news, have you heard of the kimchi spam croissant from sugarbloom bakery (they have some things at stumptown in downtown la)? croissant itself was so-so, but the flavor was delicious.
I have not heard of that and now I want it!!!! Kimchi spam sounds like the strangest combo but if someone is selling it and you’re dropping the name it makes me think I gotta try it, Heather!!!
