After Michelle and Diego introduced me to the Fonda Mayora, they gave me a tour of other restaurants in the Condesa. They pointed out a couple of hidden spots, places that could be skipped, and then a few that they highly recommend. Along that tour they pointed out Ojo de Agua. In the first glance, it was such a pretty restaurant and the menu looked delicious. The pages of plates ranged from enchiladas, salads, sandwiches, and fruit smoothies. Although we had already eaten, I wanted to eat here as well. I got the chance to do so, the very next day when my friends and I needed a place to grab lunch.
A day later, the pleasant appeal of Ojo de Agua was still evident. Groups of people took over both the seating inside and outside the restaurant as I wrote my name on the chalkboard sign. While my friends waited amongst a few others to be seated, I walked through the restaurant for the second time. I loved how the restaurant felt like home, without feeling Americanized. Although it reminded me of a hipster restaurant in Silver Lake, it never felt like I was in Silver Lake.
Once we ordered from the counter and were seated, we waited patiently. Well, not so patiently as all I wanted was the food–immediately. Looking at the tables of people with plates didn’t make it better either. There were oversized jars of fresh juice, bowls overflowing with sliced fruit, and of course sandwiches and breakfast plates as far as the eye could see. As my eyes darted between the plates of others, our food arrived. I ordered the Clubhouse Deli (140 pesos, $7.50). On my plate was a gorgeous dark brown sandwich that was packed with slices of chicken breast, bacon, lettuce, and Manchego cheese. The toast was crispy and topped with shredded cheese, there was enough of the thick chicken to make two sandwiches, and the lettuce (although it’s just lettuce) was a refreshing addition to it all.
I really liked the sandwich, but found that I got full fairly quickly. I didn’t spend much initial time on the salad because I wanted to have more space for the sandwich, however I did stick my fork into it. The few bits of the salad showed that it was definitely the light side that the heavy plate needed. It as well was filling thanks to the many slices of creamy avocado and the cherry tomatoes. My favorite part of it was the smooth vinaigrette that was drizzled across it all. It wouldn’t have been the same without it!
Lunch at Ojo de Agua was a great break during the day. The restaurant is relaxing and pretty and the food was delicious and filling. The best part of it all is that it felt like home away from home and I had no plans on leaving.
