It was Sunday morning.
At least I think it was Sunday. I knew it was morning because the sun was out, but after landing in Phuket days started to become irrelevant. That began to happen thanks to spending hours on the beach and walking around without a care in the city streets. So let’s pretend that it was in fact Sunday. With the arrival of daylight Britteny, Monique, Alicia and I got dressed for a day of anything, but wanted to start with breakfast.
Even though we quickly fell in love with Grand Mercure’s deli, Chou Chou we wanted to take advantage of the food in the city. Turns out, we didn’t have to go far since there were many restaurants directly across the street from the hotel. Out of all the options, we went to one that wasn’t so populated by tourists. It was Hello Restaurant. While the restaurant specializes in both Thai and European dishes, I wanted to go with something that I don’t always find back home. I ordered the Hawaiian Salad (100 baht, $3), a slice of Toast (40 baht, $1.10), and a Pineapple Shake (60 baht, $1.70).
In between relaxing conversations, hot wind passing over us, and a random dog strolling by the waiter brought our breakfast to the table. I have no clue what my cousins got because I was ready to eat my own food. To start, I ate the toast. There was nothing special about it as you could imagine. They drop a slice of bread in a toaster for a minute or two and then put it on a plate with butter. We have all had it before. The shake on the other hand was much better than the bread, as you would hope. It was uncomplicated: they blended pineapple juice with ice. No surprise here, the drink was perfect to help keep me cool on such a drastically humid day. This shake was different than the shakes at Chou Chou because they didn’t use milk at Hello. Because of that, the shake was much thinner and tasted solely of juice. Now it was time for the main attraction: my salad! It was so pretty and inviting to that point that I was eager to dive in. The salad sat in a pineapple that was halved and gutted. The pineapple shell was filled with thick chunks of chicken, tomatoes, onions, raisins, pineapple slices, and mayonnaise. On the menu, it sounded delicious, but a few forks in I realized the dish wasn’t to my liking. At some parts of the pineapple, there was entirely too much juice that mixed with the mayonnaise. That new “sauce” had a sour taste and a watery consistency that made my stomach uneasy. I began to divert my attention to the chicken and vegetable as it was a safer route. Thankfully, that was a good decision. I ended up eating the meat and veggies that were at the top of the pineapple as they didn’t have much of the mayo-juice concoction and it ended up tasting much better!
As a whole, the breakfast wasn’t that great. Unfortunately, I was more excited at the uniqueness and the appearance of the salad than I was with the taste. But that toast and shake…those two didn’t let me down!
