Hawkins House of Burgers Serves One of the Best Burgers in Los Angeles
If I could make an assumption, it would be that Hawkins House of Burgers is located in the hottest part of Los Angeles. I can’t tell if it’s because the sun sits closer to the restaurant, if it’s the heat coming from out of the restaurant, or if it’s the fact that there’s always a crowd of people surrounding said restaurant. Asking those questions with each visit has only led me to conclude that it’s all the above. COVID-19 or not, there’s always a line at Hawkins and it’s justified. Almost expected at this point.
If you don’t know about Hawkins House of Burgers, then I hope that quickly changes. It’s is the place that you discover because you’re lucky to know about it. Maybe you live in the neighborhood, a friend took you, or you read it from a trusted source. Whatever reason gets you there, you’re lucky to have been introduced
Anytime I’m in the area I make my way to the mustard colored shop on the corner of Imperial and Slater off the 105 freeway. The restaurant that pulls in more cars than there is space to accommodate is the kind of place you go to because everyone around is taking the day slowly. At Hawkins, the day pauses when you order and moves even slower when you eat their food because that’s the only way to do it. When enjoying their food, you have to stop any fast-paced activity to truly appreciate what rests in your hands. Once you fall into the swing of Hawkins you’ll quickly realize that nothing else matters and there’s no reason to do anything else.
Having quite possibly the best burger in Los Angeles, Hawkins is a staple. Serving it at a price that you can’t find anywhere only brings greater rationale as to why you should go. The JR Cheeseburger ($2.99) runs at an unbeatable price while their Fat Burger with Cheese ($6.99) won’t break the bank either. Add to it their mounds of Fries ($1.59) and you have the basics at a price that could barely put gas in your car. The hearty, large, and delicious burger with fries are the perfect combination that you wish other restaurants served, yet never make. Depending on what you order, the food is simple and unassuming yet manages to capture everything you want to have.
Having such delicious food from start to finish at Hawkins doesn’t make it easier to stand outside their location during a hot day in Los Angeles. But there’s a solid chance you’ll still do it. Whether it’s you alone in line or a handful of others before you, a visit to Hawkins is always worth the drive, wait, and heat.
