I’m spending more time in Inglewood thanks to my job.
The company I work for has offices throughout southern California, and I’ve been frequenting to Inglewood more and more. One of my biggest struggles while at work in the city is deciding on where to eat. As a person who isn’t shy to finding my way around, I usually let my gut show me where to go. On this occasion, I let my feet do all the work. I can’t say this methodology works every time, but it didn’t steer me wrong when it led me to The Sammiche Shoppe on East Regent.
Stepping into the restaurant I was greeted by the shop’s owner, Willie Jenkins. I let him know it was my first time in the shop which is code for, “Tell me what I should order.” Thankfully he picked up on that and asked a few questions on my food preferences. I appreciated that and went ahead and told him some of the things I like and dislike in a sandwich. I could see his mind processing options and he suddenly stopped. It was almost as if the words, “eureka” ran across his eyes as he smiled and said, “The Lucy Mae! It’s the signature sammiche”. Before he could tell me about the sandwich, I asked him to explain the reason behind the word ‘sammiche’. While I’ve used the word before in an almost childish fashion, I wanted to know what it meant to him. He explained that in his family, his grandmother pronounced ‘sandwich’ as ‘sammiche’. Her way of saying the word carried enough weight for him to give his restaurant the name. Enough said and the name fit.
When it came to the sandwich, I needed little convincing and went with it just as quickly as he said it.
As it sat before me, I could see why the Lucy Mae Air Fried Chicken Sammiche ($8.50) was the most popular in his shop. The air fried chicken sandwich could be served either spicy or regular, but if you know me well enough, you know I went with the regular. On a warm ciabatta roll, the air fried chicken came with tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, Swiss cheese, and spicy mayonnaise. Wrapping my hands around the perfectly sized sandwich made way for excitement in tasting it. The sandwich was absolutely delicious! Since the chicken was air fried it wasn’t greasy and it maintained the rich flavor and juiciness in each bite. Pairing it with sour pickles, spicy mayo, and cheese was the right components to make the sandwich memorable. I loved how the Lucy Mae at the Sammiche Shoppe was incredible because of the unique spin they put on the sandwich, but at any other shop it would be lackluster.
As I finished the sandwich I was so happy that I stumbled upon The Sammiche Shoppe. Sure it’s only a few steps from my office, but heading into the right direction and stepping inside brought me to a sandwich I can see myself obsessing over. Inglewood is growing and the restaurants are following just the same. With The Sammiche Shoppe in town, there’s a great spot to get a sandwich, or a sammiche, of your own.
