I’m thankful for great food friends.
Having people with good hearts around me with the same love for food that I have only makes it easier for me to discover new places to eat in Los Angeles. Case in point: The Red Chickz in Downtown Los Angeles. The only reason I learned about it was thanks to fellow food blogger, Tin Tin. A single invitation to have lunch out with her and food blogger Johnny was all I needed. A drive to the little big city and walk to the restaurant led to an afternoon of discovering a few menu items and finding an absolute favorite.
The Red Chickz is just one of many Nashville hot chicken style restaurants that are making their way into Los Angeles. Located on South Spring Street, The Red Chickz has taken over the space that once housed the popular Springtime Cafe that has held the address since 2014. With The Red Chickz now in its place, the budding restaurant serves a selection of Nashville hot chicken dishes in varying degrees of heat. Leveled between Cool, Glow, Spark, Bonfire, Blaze, and Inferno, The Red Chickz customizes each dish from tenders, wings, and shrimp to the preference of the person on the opposite side of the register.
As Tin Tin, Johnny, and I ordered many dishes off the menu one of my favorites was the Northern Fries ($16) but especially the Chickz Sandwich (single $12 and Double $14). The single (pictured here) was such a well-made sandwich that took a juicy and thick chicken tender and paired it with pickles, coleslaw, and comeback sauce. My favorite part of the sandwich aside from the chicken was the way the coleslaw mixed with the sauce. The two together created such a delicious hybrid that it lived up to its name of a “comeback” entirely.
With my hands around the chicken sandwich I didn’t need much else. A few grabs of the Northern Fries, sure, but even late into the night the sandwich held up so well. Those two trays aside, I can admit that there were other great menu items. From the Chickz Shrimp to the 1/4 Chickz the restaurant has something for anyone who loves a great and hearty piece of chicken.
