If dining at Messhall Kitchen in Los Feliz has been on your radar, then there’s a good chance that you’re not alone. Maybe the restaurant was added to your list of restaurants to visit in LA because of word of mouth. Or you’ve probably seen the restaurant in passing while driving down Los Feliz Boulevard. Whatever has you wanting to check them out, I can confirm that they are a place that you should visit.
When you finally make it inside the restaurant, if you’re unsure of what to order off the menu, here are five plates that you should get at least once.
When first sitting and looking over the menu, there’s no better place to being than with the starters. The Crispy Brussels ($11) with Thai herbs, sweet chili, and fresno chilis create a delicious presentation and take on what has often been the overlooked vegetable. The crispiness makes them enjoyable, but it’s the balancing of the chilis with the sweet vinegar that make it a dish that is easy to finish, but hard to share.
The plate that is undeniably worth the wait is the 30 Minute Biscuits ($10). Three hot biscuits served with a side of house preserves and fennel butter are the melt in your mouth style of bread that you may not have known you needed. Pull them apart and spread either the preserves, the butter, or both over the steaming layers until they disappear in your mouth. Once done, you’ll know that half an hour was well warranted for the elation you received.
As the Brussels and biscuits disappear, the two entrees that you must experience are the Scallops & Grits ($33) and the CAB Short Rib ($31). The plate of stone ground grits, scallops, Cajun dust, and pepper jam might be something that you may underestimate but quickly love with each bite. Plump scallops sitting in a luscious sauce and grits of the most ideal texture is all you could ask to have. In contrast, the meaty short rib with ragout, horseradish creme fraiche, mash, and succotash is filling while being delightful. Hearty in all the right places, this is the one for the person looking for a meal with weight and depth that will be unforgettable.
Unless you’re disciplining yourself or on a diet, dessert is a must. Scan the menu and let your eyes stop when you find the Warm Fudge Brownie ($14). A circular brownie at just the right after-dinner size comes with a single scoop of vanilla ice cream. Drizzled with caramel and chocolate sauce, the brownie is a deep rich chocolate that inhales the smooth vanilla to create a perfect combination. Scoop in the sauces and it’s trifecta that will end the dinner perfectly.
Dining at Messhall Kitchen is a great choice. Whether you make your way in because of the things you hear from friends, a stop while on your drive, or a friendly blog post encouraged you to make the visit, I hope you enjoy it. And if you happen to order some of the dishes here, I’m crossing my fingers that you love them as much as I have.
