Stockholm is a beautiful walkable city.
My getting somewhat lost on the first day and then wildly exploring on my own the day after that only confirmed my initial thought. I was finding areas that not only caught my attention, but my heart just as easily. With each step in whatever direction I took I couldn’t help but go deeper into Stockholm and its surrounding neighborhoods. As far as I walked, it didn’t take long for me to build up an appetite. On this particular day, I had walked so much that my ability to make a decision was at its lowest. I was hungry and needed to figure out where to eat. My only two requirements for where I ate were that the food be delicious and inexpensive. On average, that shouldn’t be that difficult to find, but considering how expensive Stockholm is, the latter was making my search almost impossible.
It didn’t take long for me to feel like I was on a never-ending quest. That was until I stumbled upon the discrete Thai restaurant, Waan Thai. Scanning over the menu outside of the forefront of the restaurant gave me numerous choices of plates to decide on. With that I walked in, was seated, and within a few minutes decided what to order for the evening. I went with the Massaman Curry (155 SEK, $18) based on the description alone. The dish made with yellow curry with coconut milk was full of chicken, potatoes, and roasted onions served with a side of rice. While it originally came with peanuts, I opted to have them left out this time around. While the accompanying salad was a pleasant start to the meal, my only focus after walking so much was the curry.
I dove into it as quickly as I could.
Taking scoops of the rice and swimming it into the soup let the rich scent of the curry waft from the bowl and upward. Tasting it was just as good as it smelled. The curry itself was gently seasoned so that it was full of flavor, but didn’t overpower the smooth coconut milk. Grabbing helpings of the tender strips of chicken, hearty potatoes, and onions and joining it altogether made the singular curry incredibly filling. It was only a matter of minutes before the rice in its entirety was gone and the curry with all of its ingredients disappeared just as well.
By the time the plates were cleared from the table, the relief of eating something delicious began to set in. I may have walked a few blocks before finding this place and taken more steps than I would have liked to, but I’m glad I found Waan Thai. The food is relatively inexpensive (by Stockholm standards) and is exactly what one would want to have after a long day of exploring a walkable city like this one.
