I love a good restaurant and am not particular about the type. As long as the food is good, I’m there. Every now and then I want to check out a nice spot. And by nice, I mean the type of place where fancy pants are encouraged. This time I got to do that when some friends and I celebrated a birthday at D’Vine Wine Cellar in Downtown LA. It was the perfect spot for my fancy pants.
Located in the basement of the O Hotel, the cellar is a gorgeous location that serves up a host of wines, tapas, and small plates. As someone who knows very little about wine, my desire is always to have something sweet and fruity. Yes it’s a girlie request, but I don’t care. Our waitress, Michelle, was amazing! She helped those of us who struggled to order, find the perfect wine. I took Michelle’s suggestion and ordered the Castello di Luzzano “Sfacciatta”, Sparkling Malvasia Emilia-Ramanga, Itlaly 2012 ($13 per glass, $50 per bottle) It was sweet, balanced, and had this candy after taste to it. I loved it. To go along with it, I ordered the Lemon Tart ($6) and a friend ordered the Hazelnut Chocolate Truffles ($6). The tart was lightly sugared and was exactly as its name describes: tarty. The truffles were full of intense chocolate with a smooth texture. One friend got the Kale Caesar Salad ($9) and another got the Selection of Charcuterie and Artisanal Cheese (three for $12, five for $18). My first thought of the salad was that it would be bland and monotonous with each bite. It wasn’t. It was fresh, flavorful, and surprisingly appetizing. Remember, it was a friend’s salad so I couldn’t actually devour it as I would have liked. Then there were the meats and cheeses which were perfection.
The only disappointing part about the wine cellar was everything went by too quickly. It’s essential to remember that with food this good, portion sizes are deceiving. So you can scarf down the cheeses and then have to order more. As well, after one glass you may be inclined to order another and another. Be careful, you can go broke that way. But then again, if you’re ordering the wine I had, it may be worth it.
