Downtown LA Gets Another Doughnut and Fried Chicken Shop with Astro

Fried chicken and doughnuts (or donuts if you’re not feeling so fancy) is such a beautiful combination that almost seems like the two were destined to be. The dynamic duo is something amazing like milk and cookies or the Virgin Mary and her donkey. Whoever brought those items together gets nothing but credit and acclaim in my book. When it comes to fried chicken and donuts, I’ve had my share of delicious variations. As of today, Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken is bringing the happy merger together to Downtown Los Angeles.
This delicious union was started in Washington, D.C. by childhood friends Elliot Spaisman and Jeff Halpern. With the growing popularity of the shop on the east coast, the two opened a location on 6th Street in the center of Los Angeles and locals like me couldn’t be happier. To see the nicely lit shop with fun branding along the walls made me want to order everything possible within my reach. I didn’t, but I was tempted to do so.
Instead, I simply ordered a few items and kept quiet.
I started with a half-dozen of their donuts. To open the black box and see a selection of donuts from Vanilla Glazed ($2.75), Maple Bacon ($3.50), to Crème Brulee ($3.50) was like getting the tastiest birthday present! The donuts were incredibly soft, rich, and the best level of lick your fingers sticky. I found that out of the variety pack I ordered, the best one was the Crème Brulee. The taste was so dynamic and delightful that I would be incredibly content with an entire box alone.
Once I pulled myself away from the donuts, I dove into the fried chicken. I ordered 2 Pieces White ($8) and 5 Chicken Fingers ($8.25). I really liked how crispy and nicely fried the chicken was, the juicy flavor of the white meat, and how it was gently seasoned. The chicken tasted delicious and I loved how they were paired with such great sauces. I kept it original with BBQ and then added a nice kick with a Sirracha buffalo sauce.
Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken has done a great job at merging two great pieces of food. Sweet doughnuts and crispy fried chicken are a great way to get all the sweet and savory you could ask for from one place. From the donuts and fried chicken I had, I think Angelenos will have another great place to eat!

ahh mentioned it on instagram but i wanted to go today! wasn’t quite down for the drive from the oc though. ended up settling for sidecar instead (though i went too late for their ham and egg, sigh). the creme brulee sounds amazing (have you had the one at doughnut plant in nyc yet?!), and the chicken looks so crispy
Yes I remember! Even though you couldn’t make it, the shop will be there the day you finally can =]
BTW I love that you “settled” for sidecar. I think you still ended up winning there! And no I haven’t had them, actually have to make my way to NYC this year to explore the food. Was it as amazing as it sounds??
Oh dang! what a combo lol fried chicken and donuts! I love all these reviews you do, I am new to your site but a huge LA foodie so this is perfect to learn about new (to me) spots
OMGut thank you so much, Cara. It makes me so happy that you dig my reviews so I hope you stick around and subscribe. Since you’re in LA and ever wanna meet up and hang, lemme know! =]
I look at the fried chicken and I cannot see anything else. Haha. I read you first, of course. Donuts, I’m still on the fence about as I’ve yet to try something that isn’t too heavy for my taste buds but I’m happy to know you enjoyed yours. You getting excited over food makes me plan out for more food to try here. Thank you for that, you beautiful woman! =D
Hahaha I love that you can read me and then the donuts and chicken! I can totally see it being heavy food as it’s so fried but I love it. Hopefully you’ll find a restaurant or a great chef who can make you a good set of lightweight fried chicken! <3
