Discover West Hollywood's Best Bistro
I fear that one day I’m going to need a lap band procedure.
Liposuction, gastric bypass, or whatever new fat removal method is popular at the time. In no way am I putting this out to the universe, but comparing my eating to exercise I have an idea of where I’m heading. Should this day come then follow with weeks of recovery, I ask that my medical bills be sent to Jerry at WeHo Bistro because he’ll be the reason I gained so much weight. Sure it could be my obsession with food or the strange way my hand involuntarily goes to my mouth, but I like the idea of blaming Jerry. Jerry and his delicious food will be the reasons that I turned from Tyra Banks and into Professor Klumps.
Well, calling myself Tyra might be a stretch but a girl can dream.
I may not need surgery right now, but I am insanely obsessed with this restaurant to the point that surgery may be in the future. So much so that I’ve visited them twice within a week and it’s not located anywhere near me. I figure, “I drive to work everyday and it’s not close to home either.” Somehow, that’s logical. One of the best parts of WeHo Bistro isn’t how pretty the eatery is or how friendly the staff is. It’s their parking. For such a popular city that has no direct access from any LA freeway, I was shocked to hear that they have their own parking and that it’s free. That was the moment I realized I had struck gold! It would also serve as a reason why I would come back frequently without any concern of getting a parking ticket. After TJ and I got over the unicorn of free parking in West Hollywood, we met Jerry and Huong who helped us get familiar with the restaurant and the brunch menu. With so many unique options (aside from pancakes and French toast), TJ and I made our decision on what to order.
To start, Jerry set us up with a Baguette Board (complimentary) and Mimosas ($25, bottomless). The board of bread, butter, and jam was a pleasant way to prep us for our brunch and keep us settled as we waited. But it was the fresh orange juice and champagne that got the conversation and jokes between us flowing. Thankfully we only had one glass each otherwise our voices may have reached a few decibels past acceptable.
Before we could finish the baguette, one of our dishes arrived. It was the Keith’s Wellness Breakfast ($10). Out came two slices of toasted gluten free bread smeared with a nice spread of almond butter and topped with sliced bananas. Alongside the bread was a bowl of fresh strawberries and blueberries, and honey. Each bite of the lightly toasted bread tasted nice. The almond butter was smooth and easy which made it an ideal pairing for the bananas. We ended up throwing the berries on top of the banana slices to add a sweet and sprightly addition to it. At first glance, it doesn’t look like a filling plate and the price may seem steep for the portion, but chew after chew you’ll find that with you begin to get full. It’s in those brief moments that you realize the small and unassuming plate really took you down and you have nothing to do but gladly admit defeat. Hail to the champ, and it’s not you.
As we finished the toast, TJ’s order was placed in front of him. A plate of the Bistro Huevos Rancheros ($14) was covered from side to side with two lightly toasted corn tortillas. On top of the tortillas were two sunny side up organic eggs, cheddar and Jack cheese, which was all topped with a spicy homemade serrano chiles salsa verde. I’m not a big fan of huevos rancheros, but I can appreciate it. From the few forks of his breakfast, I could gather that it (thankfully) wasn’t overly spicy where you could assume the chef was trying to mask the lack of flavor with pepper. Instead it’s moderate so your taste buds can enjoy the texture of the tortilla, the white of the egg, and the salsa that tops it all off. The refried beans are thick and paired well (as expected) with the rice.
It only took a single sniff to get distracted and a single glimpse for my mouth to open wide in excitement. It was with that smell and with that look that I was mesmerized by my dish: the Waffle Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($10) with breakfast potatoes and a side salad. Prior to my ordering, Jerry suggested the sandwich in such a way that no other dish on the menu could possibly top it. He described the sandwich as if it were the love interest in a romantic comedy with Renee Zellweger. “Two waffle slices surround melted cheddar, Jack, and mozzarella cheese”. It was with that simple yet beautiful sentence that I knew I had to get it, and that was exactly what I did. The incredibly soft waffle enclosed a giant melted trio of cheese that was one of the greatest and surprising combinations that I could have enjoyed, ever. The cheese is a heart-warming mix of melted gooeyness. Smeared between the waffles it tasted like the kind of sandwich your mother should have made you as kid, but didn’t. Don’t be mad at her, she didn’t know how. One of these days Jerry might give cooking classes and we all can go and learn in order to provide the children of the future with a grilled cheese sandwich the way it’s supposed to be: on a waffle.
Last but not least, we had the Cream of Mushroom Soup ($6 cup, $9 bowl). A small cup was full of a calm gray colored soup with a dainty flower as an eye catching design. It was light and thin, but after the previous dishes, we’d be foolish if we let the texture dictate our opinion of the soup’s taste. Although it was soft and incredibly smooth, it was full of flavor in the many spoonful’s we had.
As much as I’d like to continue to blame Jerry for my gradual weight gain, I can’t. He was so sweet and welcomed us in his restaurant like we were family. To a degree, the only thing that Jerry did was show me a beautiful restaurant, introduce me to a delicious brunch, and give me a place where I can break bread with friends. Instead, we’ll fault the voices in my head that keep saying, “Go back to WeHo Bistro”. While they’re at it, those voices could be useful and whisper the name and number for a good surgeon. I’m probably going to need that.

Thanks Suzy! It’s the SonyA5000, but if you’re looking for a camera I wouldn’t get it. It’s kind of outdated, maybe the 6series of the 7series!
