Comoncy in Studio City
Every now and then I get into a breakfast slump.
The kind of slump where I’m so uninterested in breakfast that I would rather sleep through the birds chirping, ignore my stomach growling, and simply roll out of bed in time for lunch. The other day, I planned to bypass breakfast altogether until my foodie friend Armen coerced me to go with him to have a brunch meeting. Since I heard “lunch” when he said “brunch”, I hopped out of bed and got ready to meet him. It wasn’t until I looked at the time that I realized it was in fact breakfast. Regardless, I was hungry so breakfast (I mean, brunch) was going to happen and it was happening at Comoncy in Studio City.
Comoncy is the type of restaurant that will wake you up just by walking in. It’s like a cup of coffee for your eyes. The bright colors of orange and white weren’t overwhelming, but they peaked my appetite while keeping me relaxed. I do have to admit that I have a slight bias to their color choice simply because, it’s pretty similar to the main colors of my logo. Twinning! Colors aside, the restaurant balances simple and modern styles without seeming forced. The nicely branded uniforms and sleek equipment make you feel as if you’re in a restaurant that cares about appearances. Then you stumble onto items like a brown paper menu fixed to a wall and you see that they let their creativity pop out in subtle places.
Once I stopped ogling over design, I sat down with Armen and we took a look over the menu. To start we ordered lattes. Armen and I got the Carmel Latte ($5) and a Vanilla Latte ($5). I say “we got” them because we basically sampled them both equally. Both lattes were a very light and easy on the palate. If I had to choose, the caramel would be the winner between the two. The kind heart art on the vanilla latte was creamy, but the noticeable flavor and sweetness of the purr-fect cat latte was exactly what I wanted. You don’t have to tell me, I already know that joke was corny.
When it was time to eat, Armen ordered the Thai Salad ($12). His salad takes chicken breast, Napa cabbage, toasted peanuts, heirloom carrots, peppadew peppers, jicama, crispy ginger, basil, a Mae Ploy vinaigrette all on top of local organic greens. It looked sprightly and delectable! I only got a few bites of it, but the forkfuls I had were just right. The cabbage, chicken breast, accents of ginger, and the vinaigrette were the shining aspects of this dish and made me want to dive in for more. It was crisp, light, and didn’t feel like it would weigh me down. Did I mention it was pretty? Well, that was until my dish came along.
I ordered the Comoncy French Toast ($9) and it was beautiful! Simple cuts of a baguette were topped with a dollop of Greek yogurt. Resting atop of the yogurt was a medley of strawberries and blueberries and a side of organic maple syrup. I was delighted to see that they didn’t go the traditional route with the dish: using a thin slice of bread and topping it with whip cream. Improvising the dish with a baguette made it feel less weighted and it didn’t sop up the maple syrup. The addition of the Greek yogurt gave it a tart topping to ease what could have been an overly sweet dish. It was done perfectly.
After it was all said and done, I was glad that I got out of bed for this brunch. The restaurant woke me up and the brunch filled me up. It’s safe to say that I got out of my breakfast slump thanks to Comoncy. Even though Armen and I were there to discuss business, the only thing that got done was clearing our plates. Productive day nonetheless.
