I don’t do well with traveling.
I wish I could say that I’m the perfect type of traveler who can pack her bags early, find comfort in being in the air, and steps off the plane like a model to a runway. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. I’m a last minute stress packer, I often get impatient the moment I head into the airport, and I have been known to slip and trip when walking out of the plane.
These are all qualities I’ve learned to expect the more I go from city to city and country to country.
One thing that can make the difficulty I have with flying seem like a distant memory is the enveloping feeling of walking into my hotel room, dropping my bags, and landing face first into the bed. I had the chance to experience that very moment when I arrived in Norfolk, Virginia. I was in the city on behalf of Visit Norfolk (the tourism board of Norfolk), and was excited to tour and learn about the city. But first, I checked into the Sheraton Waterside Hotel, and let the world pause around me as my face hit the pillows.
I think it’s safe to make a few assumptions about the hotel. For instance, the hotel isn’t designed with the hope that it will be featured on the pages of the latest interior magazine competing against other (and sure, more superior hotels); but it’s nicely done. The rooms aren’t fancy with gadgets and gizmos to entertain you; a flat screen will suffice. But what the hotel is and what the rooms have is a welcoming embrace that makes you feel like you’re in a familiar place. It feels like life breathes within the walls creating a warmth within the hotel and it ultimately feels comfortable. It’s a space where you can throw on a robe and glide out of a hot shower to sending a few emails while seated at the desk to then grabbing the remote to hop in a plush bed and catch up on your favorite horror movie.
Wait, am I the only one that ends the night with Jason? Maybe so.
Either way, the hotel feels good. Sure it may not have the pops of color in the bedding or the shower head with varying settings, but it feels nice. Check in and the moment you let that feeling wrap around you, you’ll want to stay a while. You’ll quickly see that after a long flight, nice is more than enough.
