On Saturday I went to a wedding of my friend Jose and Marta. It was at the Camarillo Ranch House where the hills surrounded the venue, trees wrapped around the reception area, and hanging lights turned the evening into a party. It was beautiful to see two happy people celebrate their love with their closest friends and family. The next best thing to witnessing them start off their new life: the open bar. So many drinks and cocktails flowed from start to finish. It was great until the morning came. No I didn’t get a hangover—fully aware of my limits. But I was starving and need something to eat as much as I need to breathe. My wedding guest, TJ, was also my breakfast buddy. With a few scrolls through Yelp to find a different spot, we made our way to Café Laurent in Culver City.
The French restaurant isn’t on the popular Culver Blvd. like you would expect. Instead it sits off the main street and away from the hustle and bustle of Culver City. This is perfect when you want to go to a hideaway restaurant that doesn’t have a guest list for entry. Café Laurent is cozy, welcoming, and all of the waiters are attentive. I needed this breakfast to take me out of my open bar slump and when I saw the relaxing patio area, I felt the unlimited white zinfandel seep out of my pores.
After looking over the menu, TJ and I were ready to order. TJ went with the La Carnaval ($9.95). It was a fresh crepe stuffed with strawberries, bananas, Nutella, and a side of fruit. That sounded good to me, but I was craving pancakes. Pancakes would be the best thing to sop up all the IPA that I thought would be a great chaser to the few shots I had. I ordered the simply titled Pancakes ($9.95). It had three pancakes that came with a choice of one topping: lemon sugar, Nutella, chocolate chips, raspberries, or blueberries. I chose to go with the raspberries and added a cup of fruit ($2 extra) considering how much cake I had the night before. And there was the side of bacon ($2.75).
When the food came out, I only saw my pancakes. TJ’s crepe looked nice, but my pancakes stole the show. They were a perfect size of golden brown flap jacks. Tossing the blueberries, strawberries, and the raspberry puree to the mix and then drizzling the syrup made the pancakes look even better. Now it was time to find out if the pancakes would taste as good as they looked. Yes, they most certainly did! The pancakes were light and fluffy. The best part was they absorbed the puree and syrup like a sponge. A delicious pancakey sponge. The fruit only enhanced the flavor so what started off delicious became irresistible. Yeah, I ate all three pancakes and devoured the bacon. It was juicy and crispy in all of the right places.
Café Laurent is a charming French restaurant that makes a filling breakfast at a nice price. Even better, they have a calming environment that engages you from the moment you walk in. I really like this restaurant and appreciate that the breakfast was able to take me out of my night of celebratory wedding drinking. Well done Laurent. Can’t wait to revisit you when I haven’t had a crazy night out.
