Ich bin eine Frau!
That’s “I am a woman” in German and sadly, it’s the only thing I know how to say. That means I really need to get back onto Duolingo. Although my German may suck, my interest in discovering restaurants (including German ones) doesn’t. Thanks to Berlin Currywurst in Grand Central Market, I can easily do that!
If you’ve never been to Berlin Currywurst then you’re missing out. Their menu may be short and sweet, but their food is anything but. I quickly ordered the breakfast sandwich ($7) since the description fit my mood perfectly. It’s any type of sausage (pork, veal, beef, chicken) your gut could desire on a bun, topped with onions/sauerkraut, plus an egg. For this visit, I kept it original and got the pork brat and I kept it at a nice and wimpy heat level of 0. To go along with it, I got the fries ($3.5) and a bottle of water ($2).
While I would love to say it was a seamless transition from order to delivery, it wasn’t. Reason being: our order never went to the kitchen. I let the waitress know and she immediately apologized for the error and offered us a free side. I chose the rote beet salad ($5) which is made up of beets, goat cheese, walnuts, on top of fresh greens. I mention this incident because I appreciate how quickly they rectified their mistake and enhanced my dining experience all with the extra side. Won me over.
Once I had my brat in hand it was almost involuntary how quickly it got to my mouth. Each bite oozed with delicious seasoning and the collaboration of the egg and sauerkraut only added to the flavor! Then to make it even better, I shoved fries inside of it to create a German mash-up of instant gratification. Please know: the fries are amazing whether they are alone or in the bratwurst. The side salad wasn’t bad. I could have done without so many beets, but then again, I’m not a beet person. Ask someone who loves beets and I’m sure they would be shouting its praises from the hills. All together the meal was delicious and I was satisfied from beginning to end. Maybe not in the middle, but definitely in the end.
